The definition of Enabler from the Strengths Profile:

  • You tend to enjoy developing people so that they can do things for themselves.

  • While providing support and encouragement, you often give people tasks that you know will stretch them.

  • You like to encourage people out of their comfort zone, in ways that will help them to grow and develop.

Questions to help you bring this strength to life:

  • Who in your life right now could benefit from your belief in them?

  • When did giving someone a stretch opportunity change how they saw themselves?

  • Where are you playing it safe with someone when they actually need to be stretched?

Strength Story: Sam

The Strength of Enabler

Sam's Enabler strength shows up in knowing when to step back. Early in her career she'd jump in and do things herself. But she noticed that when she held back, people grew in ways they wouldn't have otherwise. Today she's intentional about engaging with people rather than directing them, giving them ownership and trusting them to rise to it. Her advice: resist the urge to do everything yourself — the impact is always greater when you let people figure it out.

Fact of the Week

People are more motivated and perform better when they feel ownership of their work.

Research in motivation science shows that autonomy-supportive environments lead to higher engagement, learning, and confidence.
