Equality

Question: How can I encourage more diverse perspectives in discussions?

My Story:

For Petrina, equality isn’t just a belief; it’s the way she has lived her entire career. Starting out in the construction industry in the 1980s, she was one of a few women in her cohort. Working in an industry dominated by men, Petrina never saw herself as less than anyone else. Instead, she carried herself with confidence, treating everyone, regardless of their background or title, with the same level of respect.

Throughout her career at multiple construction companies and, later, a prestigious academic institution, Petrina made it a point to bring many perspectives into a conversation. She never let hierarchy drive whose voice mattered. When Petrina was leading a particular high-stakes project that was significantly over budget and stalled, she didn’t dictate the solution, she met with the full project team and focused on collaboration. “Let’s figure this out together. I have thoughts and can help but I want to hear your ideas. Let’s brainstorm, let’s think outside the box together,” she told them. That approach defined Petrina’s leadership style. By giving everyone a seat at the table and making people feel comfortable, she empowered her project teams to think openly and come up with solutions.

Even as Petrina climbed the ranks and was promoted to Assistant Dean, a title she earned after years of dedication, she hesitated to highlight it. While she was proud of her accomplishment, she didn’t want a title to set her apart from others. She led not with authority, but with empathy, honesty, and transparency, expecting the same from those around her.

After leaving her long-term role in academia, Petrina carried this strength of equality into her next chapter. She now coaches professionals in a program she built for women in the construction industry, ensuring they have the support and confidence to step into leadership roles in a male-dominated industry.

For Petrina, equality isn’t just about fairness. It’s about fostering an environment where everyone feels heard, valued, and empowered to contribute. It’s not about sitting at the head of the table; it’s about making sure there’s room for everyone at it.

“With a focus on coequality, decisions can be made with great respect for others and with valuable input from various viewpoints.”
